Les Sons

French pronunciation is just as important as vocabulary and grammar! Les sons (sounds) help students develop clear pronunciation, listening skills, and confidence in speaking French.

Why are sounds important?

They help with correct pronunciation – Some French sounds don’t exist in English, so practicing them is key!

They improve listening comprehension – Recognizing different sounds makes it easier to understand spoken French.

They help with spelling and reading – Knowing how sounds work helps students read and write words correctly.

Key French Sounds to Learn

Vowel Sounds – French has nasal vowels (an, in, on), which sound different from English vowels.

Silent Letters – Many French words have silent letters at the end (petit, grand).

Liaison & Elision – Some words blend together in speech (les amis → lez-amis).

The French "R" – It is pronounced in the throat, unlike the English "R".
