Les classes de mots

Les classes de mots (word categories) refer to categories of words that help us structure sentences correctly. Just like in English, words have different roles depending on how they are used in a sentence. Understanding these categories helps students build strong sentences, improve communication, and develop their French skills.

why are word categories important?

It helps students organize their sentences correctly in French.

It makes it easier to learn new words when they understand their function.

It supports grammar and communication skills by showing how words work together.

By recognizing these word categories, students will be able to write better sentences, understand texts more easily, and express themselves more clearly in French!

main word categories

Les Noms (nouns) - Words that name people, places, things, or ideas.

Les Verbes (verbs) - Action words that describe what someone does or what happens.

Les Adjectifs (adjectives) - Words that describe nouns.

Les Adverbes (adverbs) Words that describe how, when, or where something happens.

Les Déterminants (determiners) - Small words that come before nouns to introduce them.

Variable and Invariable words

In French, words are classified into two main categories based on whether or not they change their form.

Mots variables

These words change the way they are written based on gender, number, or conjugation.

Les Noms (nouns)

Les Déterminant (determiners)

Les Adjectifs (adjectives)

Les Verbes (verbs)

Les Pronoms (pronouns)

Mots invariables

These words always stay the same, no matter the gender, number, or tense.

Les Adverbes (adverbs)

Les Prépositions (prepositions)

Les Conjonctions (conjunctions)

Les Interjections (interjections)

Key rule to remember!

Invariable words never change their spelling - they stay the same in all situations!

Why is this important?

Knowing variable words helps students apply correct agreements in gender, number, and tense.

Recognizing invariable words makes sentences easier to structure because those words always stay the same.

Understanding this distinction improves writing and speaking accuracy!
